The Paphos Hotlist
Boasting the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is clear to see that the city of Paphos is a captivating locale for travellers. From the jewels spanning the rugged coastline to the archaeological treasures sprinkled throughout the land, here are my picks to soak up the natural beauty of Paphos…
Aphrodite’s Rock
Perhaps Paphos’ biggest claim to fame is as the birthplace of the Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, at Petra Tou Romiou. This majestic stack of rocks provided the goddess with her name, with ‘Aphro’ translating to foam and ‘Dite’ meaning born, as she emerged from the foam of the crashing waves around this formation in a scallop shell. Legend says if you swim around the rock three times anti-clockwise you feel younger and more beautiful… forget skincare routines and pilates, this sounds like the perfect wedding prep to us!
Blue Lagoon
Mention of Mediterranean islands brings forth vistas of bright blue waves and glorious coastlines, and Paphos does not disappoint. The Akamas Peninsula houses the Blue Lagoon, a stunning bay of sapphire-blue waters that feel as though you are swimming through liquid diamonds. Hire a boat and sail from Latchi Harbour for sun, sea and snorkelling.
The Tombs of the Kings
History lovers need to stop at the Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos, home to preserved monuments dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Once burial sites of high-ranking aristocracy, you can walk in the footsteps of the past as you venture through majestic pillars and hidden dwellings.
Paphos Archaeological Park
Within the Nea Pafos section of the city stands some of the finest preserved Roman ruins in the world. The highlight is the four large and elaborate villas of Dionysus, Aion, Theseus and Orpheus, plus the intricate mosaics that detail the famous mythological stories of the past.
Paphos Old Town
A charming and quaint section of this coastal city, the Old Town is bursting with character and is an ode to traditional Cypriot life. Get lost in the winding streets as you explore art and craft shops and taste the local produce, plus gain an appreciation for the neoclassical architecture and eye-catching art installations.
