On Thursday (31.10.24) evening I attended a preview of Molly Goddard’s bridal pop up happening out of their Bethnal Green Studio in London. Walking up into the loft to rail after rail of stunning white frocks, tulle upon tulle, I felt like I’d stumbled into the worlds coolest dressing up box…
Since launching their first bridal range in November 2020, Molly Goddard has become the go to stop for it-girl wedding dressing. In the last ten years since leaving Central Saint Martins the designer has not only dressed celebrities from Rihanna to Adowa Aboah but now has permanent collections in the Victoria and Albert Musuem in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Known for maximalist volume, tulle frocks, hand smocked taffeta dresses and vibrant colours there is an overt femininity to Goddard’s work. Despite the volume of the fabric usually used, Goddard’s pieces are far from rigid or uncomfortable, instead their collections are bold and flirtatious whilst clearly created with movement in mind; ideal for brides intending to dance all night.
The moment I pulled the first piece over my head I noticed that there was a particular feeling to being in a Molly Goddard gown. When releasing her first collection the designer told Vogue that her inspiration was not taking things too seriously, she said ‘I’m not belittling marriage, but there has to be an energy to it that’s not stern or serious’.
Usually everybody hates changing rooms, they’re hot, overstimulating and prone to catching you in compromised positions that nobody ever need see themselves in. Yet, being half naked in Goddard’s studio with a group of women I’d never met felt a bit like being five again playing the most luxurious game of dress up.
I was wearing day-old crusty makeup, chunky boots and my hair had fallen victim to tube-wind but yet in every piece I felt effortlessly glamorous, feminine, bold and sophisticated.
When declaring your undying love to the person you’ll hopefully spend the rest of your life with, above all you should wear something you feel comfortable in that makes you feel like the most beautiful, authentic version of yourself. Molly Goddard bridal promises exactly that. I hope that all brides whatever they choose to wear feel like a Goddard bride on their wedding day.
