Modern Romance

Chloe & Connor

Barcelona, Spain

On the way back to the airport from Rome, just after we got engaged, I found Masia Cabellut online and turned to Connor, saying, “This is our venue.” He laughed, but no matter how many other places we looked at, we kept coming back to it.

We didn’t set out to have a particular theme, but I would describe our style as monochromatic and minimalist. We focused on simple, thoughtful details and included hand-drawn and handwritten touches throughout the day.

I will never forget how much we owe to Jurate, whose generosity and understanding meant our wedding could even happen. She was the linchpin of the entire day. She introduced us to our incredible planner, Valerie, who, by complete coincidence, turned out to be our best man’s cousin! Valerie was calm, organised and full of creative ideas.

Finding the right dress was one of the hardest parts for me. I must have tried on around fifty gowns and still hadn’t found one that felt like me. When I visited Vivienne Westwood in London, everything changed. Rosie, the stylist, was amazing and guided me through the process with such care. At the last minute, I decided to change the cape from chiffon to embroidered tulle with roses, and she made it happen. I have always loved veils on other people, but never on myself, so I designed a short face veil for the ceremony and I absolutely loved it.

Connor had his suit made at Louis Copeland in Cork. It was a light linen, perfect for the Spanish heat, and he looked incredible. The groomsmen wore black suits to tie in with our monochrome aesthetic, while the bridesmaids wore ivory. Each chose their own dress, all different in style and length, but somehow they fitted together perfectly.

We originally thought we would do our own flowers, but about six weeks before the wedding, Diablo Diablo came on board, and I’m so grateful they did. Yago and John are creative geniuses. I wanted sculptural calla lilies, anthuriums and orchids in dark purples, whites and soft greens, and they brought that vision to life. They also helped with the ceremony design, the tablescapes, and even added a little floral surprise for us at our place settings.

I walked down the aisle to Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard and back up to The Pretender by Foo Fighters. One of my best friends and bridesmaids sang Hallelujah during the ceremony which was a beautiful nod to my childhood summers in Kerry. We had a string quartet playing during the ceremony and aperitivo, and one of our bridesmaids made an amazing playlist for dinner called Wedding Chill, which transitioned into Wedding Build as the dancing began.
