Sonja & Tomoya had their dream come true with a traditional Japanese ceremony…
WEDDING PLANNER: Haute Couture Design
The date was October 29th 2022 and it was a beautiful Autumn day in Japan at the Asaba Ryokan for Sonja and Tomoya’s special day. Choosing this particular day was an exact science for these lovebirds though… “We checked the average daily weather of our wedding location over the last ten years and opted for the Saturday that statistically had the best chance of sunshine!”, they smiled, “our wedding was mainly held outside so this was critical for success.” The couple chose well as the mystical Japanese greenery and traditional architecture shone in the glow of the glorious sunshine on their big day.
As soon as they had seen photographs of a wedding that their planners, Haute Couture Design, had held at Asaba Ryokan before, they knew it was the venue for them. “I had seen a photo of a bride arriving on a boat to a Japanese ceremony and I knew I wanted a similar set-up so we chose the exact same venue for the Japanese ceremony and Nakaizu Winery for the Western ceremony and reception dinner.” Traditional Japanese music lulled in the air as Sonja glided along the tranquil waters to Tomoya waiting for her at the pier, with the bride concentrating on the beautiful koi fish beneath her to calm her nerves. “My dad actually only realised he would be holding the parasol for me on the boat moments before we took off!”, Sonja laughed, “it was a funny moment how taken aback he was but he took the challenge well.”
The couple’s Western ceremony held very special memories for Tomoya, who reminisced that the chapel doors opening to reveal Sonja in her dress was so special. “She looked so beautiful in her gown and this moment made it all real, it felt like a movie but it was brand-new because it was happening to us,” he gushed, “we wanted a few wow-moments throughout the day, from Sonja’s arrival on the boat, to fireworks in the evening and an autumnal flower arch over the main table. We were so happy with the outcome and the photos are gorgeous.”
Outfits were also an important part of the day for the couple, with local residents helping Sonja into her Shiromuku, a white wedding kimono, with layers of fabric and belts and a Tsunokakushi over a metal frame on her head. “I felt honoured to wear such valuable garments for our first ceremony,” the bride explained, “and for our Western ceremony I wore a three-piece set from Halfpenny London made up of a white slip dress and embroidered top and skirt.” Tomoya’s tailored tuxedo was the perfect compliment to Sonja’s ensemble, all uplifted by the magical and tranquil environment of Asaba Ryokan.
