Summer never really arrived in the UK this year, and it left as quickly as it came. Autumn is most certainly already here, and from a fashion perspective, we’re not mad about it. Autumn is the perfect season to wear all your favorite pieces without feeling overstimulated or having to tear off layers every five minutes. It’s also a far cry from the depths of winter when fashion often becomes abandoned in favour of surviving the cold.
Autumn trends for 2024 lean toward cozy and practical, with a strong outdoorsy theme. Fashion month showcased plenty of tweeds, plaids, wool, and suede, with trends from last year—such as burgundy tones and faux fur—picking up right where they left off in 2023.
In terms of footwear, knee-high boots are still an Autumn/Winter essential, but flats, from loafers to Mary Janes, will be key in the coming months.
SUEDE

Suede jackets seem to be everywhere this year. It’s hard to open Instagram or Pinterest without immediately seeing someone wearing a beautiful brown or rusty suede jacket. Whether in a bomber style, fringed for a boho look, or a 90s blazer-type fit, suede is a fantastic alternative to the leather jacket.
While many high-street stores, including Mango and Zara, offer great options for suede jackets in their new collections, second-hand suede is always best. Not only are second-hand suede jackets usually genuine, but they are also a fraction of the price and a much more sustainable option. Try scouring your local vintage store or charity shop. However, if you don’t have time to go thrifting, Vinted and Depop are fantastic sources for second-hand gems that you can wear season after season.

Country Core

This season is all about making practicality fashionable. Both designers and high-street brands have embraced the cozy aesthetic of the English countryside, which the internet has lovingly dubbed ‘countrycore.’ It’s a later iteration of last winter’s ‘eclectic grandpa’ trend.
Think large woolly jumpers that look like you’ve borrowed them from your dad’s wardrobe (extra points if you actually do). Argyle prints and plaid are also trending this autumn, perfect for layering under tweed or waxed work-wear jackets. The goal is to walk down the high street and turn up at brunch with the girls looking as if you’re about to make a bonfire at the end of the garden or tinker in the shed.
Again, one of the best things about this trend is that even if you don’t have a family member to ‘borrow’ from, high-quality pieces of this style can easily be thrifted. Enter Cameron Diaz in The Holiday.
The Flat Shoe

The knee-high boot will never go out of style for autumn and is a staple for every Autumn/Winter wardrobe. So, if you haven’t already, invest in a pair.
However, this year, the shoes of our school days are making a strong resurgence, and we’re here for it. Feminine and playful while being practical and easy to style, loafers and Mary Jane shoes are the perfect alternative where you might have previously reached for trainers. A pair of jeans becomes more chic when paired with Mary Janes, while any skirt becomes immediately more wearable with loafers.
Though you can’t go wrong with classic black patent, we’re loving iterations of the flat shoe in shades of red, brown, and silver this autumn. To get more creative with the look, complement your flats with colorful socks and hosiery. For an evening look, you can style Mary Jane’s sexier older sister, the low kitten heel, in the same way.

Deep Burgundy
Last year, the ‘pop of red’ was the micro-trend of the season. According to our social media feeds, the runway, and the high street, it feels like for autumn 2024, the red moment has matured into a deep wine shade.
Burgundy tones, being more subtle and perhaps more wearable, are perfect for investment items such as bags and coats. Burgundy is timeless and never goes out of style. Rich cherry and merlot hues are ideal for investing in a bag, a pair of leather shoes, or a gorgeous jacket.
Deep burgundy is just as elegant and timeless as black, while being slightly more confident and interesting, making it the perfect color to invest in this season.
