Whether you’re planning a chic honeymoon or a spontaneous summer getaway, Asterion Suites & Spa combines swim-up spaces, exceptional dining and laid-back island charm on Crete’s northwest coast.

Crete has a special way of creating everlasting memories. Perhaps it’s the warmth of the people, the extraordinary food or the breathtaking landscapes – whatever it is, I arrived at Asterion Suites & Spa and felt instantly at ease.
Tucked away in the Chania region, this adults-only retreat is exactly the kind of place couples go to unwind, relax and escape all distractions. The vibe is effortlessly boho-chic, imagine natural textures, earthy tones and design details that feel thoughtfully considered at every turn. With 66 rooms and suites, it maintains a sense of exclusivity, and because a number of guests have access to their own private pool, a real sense of tranquillity and seclusion runs throughout the resort.

Rooms & Suites
I checked into the One-Bedroom Swim-up Suite and the terrace set the tone from the moment I arrived. A double lounger sits right at the water’s edge, just steps from your room, the kind of nook that invites sunrise mornings and lazy afternoons by the pool. Inside, the suite is incredibly spacious, with twin sinks, a kitchen, dining area and lounge, all of it designed for slower days, whether you prefer to stay put and make the most of your terrace pool or venture out to explore the island. For couples seeking complete privacy, the One-Bedroom Suite with Private Pool means the water is entirely yours – just the two of you celebrating newlywed bliss as you soak up all the emotions of the big day.

Dining
After an early morning flight from London Gatwick, I arrived just in time for a leisurely lunch by the pool – the ideal way to instantly slip into holiday mode. Matter, the resort’s main restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and excels no matter the time of day. Taking a seat on the terrace, I started with a crisp Hugo Spritz, accompanied by a generous spread of mezze dips, warm pita and tender calamari. For the main course, the pork souvlaki – beautifully presented with pita, chips and tzatziki – is a must-try and a delicious introduction to my Cretan flavour journey.
Come evening, the resort’s à la carte restaurant, 35°, takes centre stage. Think refined interiors, locally-sourced ingredients and inventive twists on traditional recipes. The mellow sounds of a live saxophonist drifted through the al fresco dining area as I dined on authentic starters before moving on to grilled king prawns with all the trimmings, an atmospheric evening so worth booking ahead for.

Facilities
The main pool quickly became one of my favourite spots at the resort. The sunbeds are layered with cushions so thick and indulgent you won’t want to leave, while the chic daybeds offer all the comfort of a king-sized bed right beside the water. It is the ideal setting to work your way through the resort’s extensive cocktail menu, sipping everything from fruity frozen daiquiris to crisp spritzes beneath the Cretan sun. There are also plenty of cosy seating areas dotted throughout the resort, offering a welcome excuse to slip away for a private toast to married life. When you finally manage to tear yourself away from the charm of the resort, the beach is located just steps away – made for a spontaneous stroll along the shore or a dip in the shimmering sea.

The spa lies nestled within the resort’s quiet surroundings, a sleek sanctuary of treatment rooms, sauna and relaxation area wrapped in a calm, unhurried atmosphere that feels tailor made for a honeymoon. My back massage was the perfect antidote to a long travel day; I emerged entirely refreshed and ready to tackle the welcome holiday itinerary of nothing but lounging by the pool for the rest of the afternoon.
To-Do List
It’s well worth venturing out for a day trip because Crete is too spectacular to keep at arm’s length. Chania is just a 20-minute drive away, offering a captivating maze of narrow cobbled streets, striking architecture and artisanal boutiques, making it easy to lose track of time wandering around the bustling harbour as you uncover hidden gems.
For the dreamiest date night, start at Karavitakis Winery. Your visit begins with an intimate tour to learn the secrets behind winemaking, before you settle into the peaceful surroundings to sample exceptional local wines as the sun begins to set. www.karavitakiswines.com
From there, look no further than Frosini’s Garden for an unforgettable dinner. Tucked away from the usual tourist spots, this enchanting taverna stopped me in my tracks. Draped in intricate handmade crochet and enveloped by vibrant greenery, it feels like stepping into a well-kept local secret. We feasted on a classic Greek salad, a sizzling meat platter and an array of traditional small plates, every bite as authentic as the setting itself. The evening concluded, in true Cretan fashion, with a shot of local raki.
